Hinduja College Students Walk for Water Conservation

Some causes are worth walking for, literally. On 21st August 2026, our DLLE Unit joined the State-Level “Maha Walkathon – Walk for Water,” organised by the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Government of Maharashtra, lending student energy to a cause that touches every household in the state.

A Day Rooted in Purpose and Legacy

The walkathon fell on the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Late Sudhakarrao Naik, observed as Water Conservation Day, or Jal Sandharan Din. That timing gave the event real weight, tying a civic campaign to the legacy of a leader remembered for his work on water conservation. Our student volunteers showed up in full strength, part of a larger state effort to promote groundwater recharge and push sustainable habits among young people.

Marching with a Message

Dressed in official “Walk for Water” merchandise and runner bibs, our students marched along the coastal promenade, holding institutional banners and raising slogans that put water preservation front and centre. It wasn’t a quiet gesture, it was a visible, public statement, students engaging directly with citizens along the route and explaining why watershed management and drought mitigation matter for Maharashtra’s future.

Guided Participation, Genuine Impact

Faculty coordinator Dr. Mrunalini Shringare guided the students throughout the walkathon, helping channel their enthusiasm into a disciplined, purposeful presence. That structure mattered, it meant conversations with the public weren’t just well-intentioned, but informed and consistent, reinforcing the campaign’s core message wherever the march passed.

More Than Just a Walk

What stood out most was how naturally the day blended civic action with teamwork. Marching together, representing the college publicly, and engaging strangers on a shared cause gave students a tangible sense of collective responsibility, the kind that’s hard to build inside a classroom alone.

Turning Awareness Into Leadership

The walkathon gave students something beyond a good cause to rally behind: real exposure to how civic campaigns actually function, from organisation to public outreach. That hands-on experience built practical leadership skills in environmental protection, the kind students carry forward into future community initiatives, not just this one.

A Reflection of What DLLE Stands For

Events like the Maha Walkathon capture exactly what our DLLE Unit continues to champion: students stepping outside campus to contribute meaningfully to causes larger than themselves. Whether it’s water conservation, civic engagement or environmental stewardship, the unit keeps creating space for students to turn awareness into action.

Walking the Talk on Sustainability

By the end of the day, our volunteers had done more than complete a walkathon, they’d helped mobilise public attention toward one of Maharashtra’s most pressing environmental priorities. It’s a small but meaningful example of how student energy, when pointed in the right direction, can genuinely move a conversation forward.
