New YCMOU Students Learn How Distance Learning Works at Hinduja
Starting a new course can feel overwhelming, and even more so when much of the learning happens at a distance. How does the curriculum work? Where do the textbooks come from? How are exams handled online? Those were the questions answered at an orientation session held for students of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) for the academic year 2026–27.
Where and When
The session was organised on 18th October 2026 by the Smt. P. D. Hinduja Trust Institute of Management Studies at Hinduja College, Sadhana House, Worli. Students attended along with visiting faculty members of the college, making it a warm and well-attended start to the new academic year.
A Traditional Beginning

The programme opened with introductory remarks by Dr. Rustam Tajne. This was followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, the offering of a floral garland to the idol of Lord Ganesha and the rendition of the university anthem. The faculty members present were then welcomed, setting a friendly tone for the session.
Understanding the University and the College
Dr. Tajne introduced students to the vision and policies of the university and walked them through the academic curriculum. He also explained how the library and management systems work at Hinduja College, so that students would know where to find support and resources during the year.
The Structure of the Programmes
Prof. Kalpana Shah shared guidance on how the academic programmes are structured, including course content and the prescribed textbooks offered by YCMOU. For a student beginning a distance programme, knowing what to study and in what order makes everything that follows easier to plan.
How Distance Education Works
Prof. Gaurav Kamble then gave a detailed explanation of how the university’s distance education system functions. Understanding the system is especially important for students who study largely on their own, as it helps them know what to expect and how to stay on track throughout the year.
Guidance on Online Assessment

Prof. Shamim Shaikh guided the students through the university’s online assessment process. Examinations and evaluations are often the biggest worry for new students, so a clear walkthrough of how they work went a long way in settling nerves. Together, the sessions gave students a better grasp of the academic framework, learning resources and evaluation procedures.
Behind the Scenes
The smooth running of the programme was supported by Mr. Kishor Malap and Manaswi Raorane, whose help with organisation made the session run without a hitch.
A Note of Thanks
The orientation closed with a vote of thanks by Dr. Tajne, who expressed gratitude to the event organisers, the P. D. Hinduja Trust, Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, the faculty members, the students and everyone present for their contributions and participation.
A Welcoming Start to the Year
The session served as a clear and welcoming introduction to the academic year 2026–27. By the end, students had a better understanding of the university’s academic structure, its distance learning system and its assessment procedures, and knew where to turn for guidance along the way.
